I am going to share with you tactics to help increase audience engagement rates. This is important for you to know as an influencer for your brand, but also when you are on the look-out for finding the “right” influences to partner with for your upcoming campaign. There is so much valuable information I have to share with you that I broke this topic down into multiple video series.
- Use Community-Driven Content To Increase Your Engagement Rate
Building a sense of community is one of the best ways to increase engagement. It all comes down to your content. Your content is what impacts your follower count, impressions, reach, engagement rates, and ultimately helps build a sense of community.
You should be paying attention to what your audience consistently engages with the most and then begin to create content with those same patterns and themes. Get to know your audience and what they want to see more of.
With that being said though, here are some examples of content that has been proven to increase engagement rates: emotionally gripping material, personal development topics that appeal to your specific audience, contest and give-aways, inspirational content, big news and announcements, humor, and asking your audience questions on controversial topics. These topics lend themselves to having higher engagement than average.
The following sections I will share different hashtags strategies to implement for your social media.
- Apply Effective Hashtag Strategies
Hashtags are a great way to help your content be discovered and also increase your engagement rate.\
Believe it or not, using more than five hashtags in your caption can actually hurt you with the current Instagram algorithm. Instagram can categorize you as a spammer who is trying to cheat the system. What is best is to use a strategic limited number of hashtags: 1 or 2 in the caption body and finish off with 3 to 4 highly relevant hashtags within the comments section.
Here is an example you could use. Say you took a before and after weight loss photo and within the caption you wrote: #PowerfulMe. #ICanDoIt. Then you would put 3-4 hashtags within the comment section. Instagram algorithm will still take into account those hashtags. Make sure the 2 to 3 hashtags you use in the caption, directly relate to the emotion of the content.
Another great strategy is to create 4 to 10 sets of hashtags that relate to the types of content you create often. Save these into the notes app on your phone. Each time you post, copy and paste one of the hashtag sets into the first comment of your post after posting the photo. Try rotating through your sets of hashtags to see which photo receives the highest engagement and reach. Remember, testing and monitoring is everything!
- Switch To An Instagram Business Profile
Instagram Business profile will provide you analytics from your post such as your reach and impressions. The business profile will also share with you the reach of your hashtags. This way you can determine how effective the hashtags actually proved to be. You can find this data by selecting on the post you wish to see the analytics for. Then tap view insights to see the analytics report. You do have to swipe up in order to see the full report. This data is so helpful because it allows you to test and monitor your perfect hashtags.
If you get the optimal set of hashtags then you should see a bump of engagement. However, do not use the same long set of hashtags on every post. Instagram is quick to label this as spam behavior. So continue to use the right hashtags but change it up ever so often. When you create content make sure that you are using hashtags that make sense and align with the theme of the content.
- Use Hashtags From Other Successful Accounts Within Your Niche
Another strategy is copying the hashtags from a successful account within your niche. Go into your Instagram search box and type in their most used hashtags at the top. From there Instagram will actually give you a list of similar hashtags you can also test out and use. This way you can let Instagram do the work for you in finding similar hashtags for you.
- Use Both Popular and Niche Hashtags
The key is to find and use a combination of popular and niche hashtags (niche within your category) to find your brand’s perfect combination. Say you are doing a campaign launch at a beach resort and take a photo on a popular beach. You would want to use that beaches’ name and the resort’s name as an example of niche hashtags to use.
Ultimately, It’s not about getting seen by a lot of people, it’s about getting seen by the right people. That’s how hashtags lead to higher engagement and more followers.
- Use Hashtags Within A Certain Number of Accounts Who Have Used For Their Own Content
Hashtags are a great way for your post to get noticed. However, pay attention to the number of posts that use that hashtag. You do not want your post to be lost in the mix, but you also do not want to use hashtags that are not that widely used. So I suggest only using hashtags with a post number between 10,000 – 750,000. Please note this is not an exact science, but only a guideline. Remember testing and monitoring for your own brand is key.
- Use Hashtags In Your Instagram Stories For A Higher Reach
Take the top 30 hashtags in your niche, copy paste into a google doc and then paste the hashtags to an Instagram story making sure the text color and the background color match. You will then be able to hide the hashtags in the story’s background. The stories will still receive the reach from the hashtags but will not be visible to the viewer.
